Objective:To investigate the relationship between insulin-like growth factor-Ⅰ(IGF-Ⅰ) and left ventricular mass index (LVMI),carotid arterial intima-media thickness(IMT),urinary albumin excretion rate (UAER) in patients with essential hypertension (EH).Methods:serum levels of IGF-Ⅰwere measured using enzyme-linked immunoassay,IMT were made use echocardiography, and the LVMI were calculated.UAER were measured using ratenephelometry. In 50 normal individuals and 102 patients with EH,The EH patients were divided into 2 groups(EH and EH+LVH) according to the left ventricular mass index,The EH patients were divided into 3 groups according the level of blood pressure and were divided into 3 groups according to the level of IMT.The EH patients were divided into 2 groups according to the UAER normal or abnormal.Results:①IGF-Ⅰlevel in patients with EH was significantly higher than that in normal controls(p<0.05),IGF-Ⅰlevel in patients with EH+LVH was significantly higher than that in normal controls and that in patients with EH (p<0.01, p<0.05); IMT: in patients with EH+LVH was significantly higher than that in normal controls and that in patients with EH (p<0.01, p<0.01); UAER level in patients with EH was significantly higher than that in normal controls,UAER level in patients with EH+LVH was significantly higher than that in normal controls and that in patients with EH (p<0.01, p<0.01).②With the increase of blood pressure, the serum IGF-Ⅰlevel , LVMI, IMT and UAER and are increase in the 3 groups of EH patients respectively.③And with the increase of serum IMT,IGF-Ⅰlevel were increased in the 3 groups of EH patients respectively(p<0.01,p<0.01).④The serum IGF-Ⅰlevel in the patients with normal UAER were higher than the patients with abnormal UAER(p<0.01).⑤The levels of IGF-Ⅰhad positive correlation with SBP,DBP,LVMI,IMT and with UAER (r=0.39,p<0.05; r=0.30,p<0.05; r=0.43,p<0.05 ; r=0.48,p<0.05; r=0.51,p<0.05 ).Conclusion:Serum IGF-Ⅰis involved in the pathophysiological process of essential hypertension, and probably played a very important role in the development of 1eft ventricular hypertrophy, artherosclerosis and impairment of kidney.
