This paper collects old and new, domestic and foreign material, synthesizes various theories, and from many theoretical and experimental angles and levels, discusses the spleen zang-emotion and its related theories. For TCM clinical practice, a possible theory and experimental evidence are supplied from the spleen theory of treating emotional problems (especially brain system diseases). The theoretical research section on the development of spleen zang-emotion and its related theories is organized, the meaning standardized, and the relationship of the mind to the five emotions and thought to the seven emotions defined with consideration to the basic concepts. At the same time, it discusses the deeper meaning of the spleen storing the mind and governing thought, and discusses the relationship of the spleen to both the other emotions and to the brain. The recognition that the spleen and stomach are the basis for the acquired root and are the source of qi and blood production and transformation is the material foundation of emotional production. The spleen governs the pivot of qi dynamism and is the center of emotional activity whichgives rise to a regulatory action. This paper also deeply analyzes the spleen zang-emotion's related clinical significance and discusses the experimental section's fundamental question of the influence of spleen deficiency on a rat's learning and memory. The experimental research proceeds from the angle of the influence of spleen deficiency on cognition. The experiment is studied through a water maze and observes different long-term learning and memory states in a rat. It also determines the content changes of NO and NOS in the brain tissue of a rat. These are done to reveal the effect of spleen deficiency on the mechanism of the learning and memory of a rat and to embody the significance of "the spleen storing the mind and governing thought." The result shows that the spleen deficiency group and free recovery group are obviously weaker than the control group and the treatment group (P<0.01) and also are weaker than the content of NO and the activity of NOS (P<0.01)-with the spleen deficiency group being the weakest. Therefore, NO and NOS are associated with learning and memory, thus indicating the influence of spleen deficiency on a rat's learning and memory.
