BACKGROUND: The etiological factors of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) are complicated, and DPN is hard to be treated. According to investigations on animals, it is shown that TangLuoTong can anti-coagulate, thrombolysis, distend vessels, reduce blood viscosity and has actions like aldose reductase inhibitors. This clinical experiment was taken to investigate the effects of TangLuoTong on DPN.OBJECTIVE: Clinical effects of TangLuoTong on DPN are observed in order to find a new and effective anagraph to treat on DPN in Chinese medicine.MATERIALS AND METHODS: According to WHOPNTF diagnosis standards and elimination standards and Chinese medicine symptom standards, 48 cases with DPN were selected. They were separated into two groups with random and double-blindness method, A group and B group(control group), each group had 24 cases. The A group were treated on with TandLuoTong and pseudo-inositol, the B group with pseudo-TangLuoTong and inositol, and all of which were taken orally. Two groups were all treated on to reduce blood sugar regularly. All cases were estimated or observed right common personal nerve sensory conduction velocity (NCV), feet great toe diapason vibration sensation, symptoms of pain and numbness, FPG and PPG, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbAIC) .RESULTS: Right common personal nerve sensory conduction velocity were ameliorated significantly in A group and B group (P<0.01), and feet great toe diapason vibration sensation were increased significantly in two group (P<0.01), and there were no significantly different between two groups (P>0.05) after treatment. There was no significant dissimilarity between pre and post treatment on FPG and PPG in the two groups (P>0.05), but HbAIC became lower after treatment in the A group (P<0.05). All patients had no unusual upset in treatment, routineof blood, urine and stool, liver and renal functions weren't abnormal after treatment.CONCLUSION: 1. TangLuoTong and inositol can significantly ameliorate DPN right common personal nerve sensory conduction velocity (NCV) and feet great toe diapason vibration sensation. 2. There was significant amelioration on Chinese medicine symptom with TangLuoTong or inositol after treatment, and TangLuoTong group is more significant. 3. There were no severe side effects in TangLuoTong and inositol treatment.
