In this study , the expression of survivin and p53 were studied in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and tissues adjacent to carcinoma . We tried to probe into the relationships between survivin or P53 and the main clinicial characterstics and the safe incisal range of removing laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma according to the level of protein of gene expression . We use SP-immunochemical and PV-immunochemical technique to investigate the expression of survivin and p53 in different regions of larynx including 38 cases larygeal squamous cell carcinoma , adjacent mucosa which was 2 , 5 , 10 mm away from cancer and 10 cases polyp of vocal cord as control. The result showed that no survivin was detected in polyp of vocal cord ; 25 of 38(65.8%)specimens from the patients with larygeal squamous cell carinoma ( LSCC ) expressed survivin ; 18 of 38 (47.4%) specimens from adjacent mucosa which was 2 mm away from tumors expressed survivin ; 9 of 38 ( 23.7% ) specimens from adjacent mucosa which was 5 mm away from tumors expressed survivin ; 1 of 38 ( 2.6% ) specimens from adjacent mucosa which was 10 mm away from tumors expressed survivin ; overexpression of survivin was related to the clinical stages , histological grades and lymphatic metastasis of the tumor ,but unrelated to the ages of patients with laryngeal carcinoma and sites of primary tumors; no P53 was detected in polyp of vocal cord ; 23 of 38 (60.5%) LSCCs expressed P53 ; 20 of 38 (52.6%) specimens from adjacent mucosa which was 2 mm away from tumors expressed P53 ;12 of 38 ( 31.6% ) specimens from adjacent mucosa which was 5 mm away from tumors expressed P53 ; 2 of 38 ( 5.3% ) specimens from adjacent mucosa which was 10 mm away from rumors expressed P53 ; overexpression of P53 was related to the clinical stages , histological grades and lymphatic metastasis of the tumor, but unrelated to the ages of patients with laryngeal carcinoma and sites of primary tumors. Expression of survivin and P53 increased as tissue progressed in sequence from polyp of vocal cord , 10 , 5 , 2 mm distant mucosa adjacent to carcinoma . A significant different expression in most of them can be seen at regions of 5mm and 10mm distant from the tumor ( P<0.05 ).
