Balanophora involucrate Hook.f. belongs to the genus Balanophora of family Balanophoraceae, It is dicotyledonous, perennial, and parasitic plants, and widely grows in Yunnan, Hubei, Guizhou, Sichuan and Tibet. The whole plant is medicinally used as an antipyretic, an antidote and hemostatic agent in China. This paper described its chemical constituents and content determination of a principle as following:1. Ten compounds were obtained from Balanophora involucrate.Hook.f, including three triterpenoids, four phenylpropanoids and three steroids. Using IR, UV,MS, 1HNMR, 13CNMR,DEPT,HMBC,HMQC techniques and chemical methods, their structures were identified as coniferin(A), mehtylconiferin(B), 4-O-β-D-glucopyransyl coniferyl aldehyde(C), lupeol(D), lupeol acetate(E),β-amyrin(F),β-sitosterol(G),β-sitosterol glucoside(H),β-sisosteryl glucoside-3'-O-linoleate (I) and scaphopetalone(J). Among the ten compounds, compound I was a new compound, compound J was isolated from the genus of Balanophora for the first time, compound C was isolated from this plant for the first time.2. Using HPLC/UV method, the content of coniferin, which is the major compound of Balanophora involucrate, was determined in the whole plant of Balanophora involucrate.
