Rhizoma Pinelliae in the Chinese pharmacopoeia (2005) is from rhizome of Pinellia ternata(Thunb.) Breit,family Araceae.It was used popularly in china and has the efficacy for drying dampness and eliminating phlegm,lowering the adverse rising qi to stop vomiting,dispersing stagnation and externally dispersing swelling and relieving pains.It is often used for cough with plenty of sputum ,dizziness caused by damp turbidity up attacking,vomiting due to the adverse-rising of stomach-qi,stagnation and oppression in the chest and epigastric abdomen,and globus hystericus.Its crude product is used for goiter and subcutaneous nobule.The modern pharmacologic research proves Rhizoma Pinelliae still has anti-caugh,anti-vomiting and antibiosis functions etc. Rhizoma Pinelliae is often used in prescriptions of tradiational Chinese medica.According to investigation , Rhizoma Pinelliae is sometimes replaced by Rhizoma Typhonii Flagelliformis which is from the same family.And the research of recent years show that there are so many problems in the qualities of Rhizoma Pinelliae,which result in failure in retrying the same pharmacologic study.In order to identify the Rhizoma Pinelliae from its confused species and to evaluate the quality of Rhizoma Pinelliae,several studies on the pharmacognosy of Rhizoma Pinelliae have been conducted,such as literature delving , Character and morphology identification,chemical identification and research of quality .The results showed as follows:1.Textural research affirmed that Rhizoma Pinelliae is first written in Li ji·yue ling and in Wu shi er bing fang it was used as drug firstly.It is affirmed that Rhizoma Pinelliae used in the old days is the same as which was written in The Plant Index of China.This is consistent with pharmacopoeia of china in 2005.2. A scientific basis for identification of Rhizoma Pinelliae and its confused species Rhizoma Typhonii Flagelliformis has been provided by observation and camparing of their character,microidentification of anatomy of tissue and powder.3.TLC was used to identify Rhizoma Pinelliae and its confused species Rhizoma Typhonii Flagelliformis.According to the results,the Arg can not be tested in the latter,which is an important basis to identify them.4. Ultraviolet line method was adopted to identify Rhizoma Pinelliae and its confused species Rhizoma Typhonii Flagelliformis.The UV spectra of the two herbal drugs gave different maximum absorption peaks both in number and intendities.The method was both simple and accurate and can be used to distinguish one from the other.5.Study results on the physical and chemical identification and quality of the two herbal drugs are as following:(1) The dual wavelength TLCS method was selected to determine the the contents ofβ–sitosterol in Rhizoma Pinelliae,Rhizoma Typhonii Flagelliformis and their processed products. The results showed that the cotents ofβ–sitosterol in the crude and the processed products of Rhizoma Typhonii Flagelliformis are more than in the crude and the processed products of Rhizoma Pinelliae.(2)The contents of ephedrin in Rhizoma Pinelliae , Rhizoma Typhonii Flagelliformis and their processed products were determined by HPLC.According to the results, the contents of ephedrin in Rhizoma Pinelliae and Rhizoma Typhonii Flagelliformis are different apparently,which can offer consideration for evaluation of quality of them.(3)Amino acids in Rhizoma Pinelliae and its confused species Rhizoma Typhonii Flagelliformis are analyzed by means of HITACHI Model L-8800 High Speed Amino Acids Analyzer.The results showed that the contents of amino acid in Rhizoma Typhonii Flagelliformis is higher than in Rhizoma Pinelliae.
