Objective To explore the correlation between incidence of coronary heart disease(CHD) and markers of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and interleukin-18(IL-18) in patients with CHD.This may help to diagnosis, anticoagulation, thrombolysisand prognosis for patients with CHD.Concurrently, the two markers may contribute toscreen, confirm and treat thrombobic disease in clinic. Methods 20 controls and 60 patients with CHD were selected, and the patientswere put into 4 groups: stable angina (SAP), unstable angina (UAP),acute myocardialinfarction (AMI), old myocardial infarction (OMI), every group had 15 patients.Theserum levels of VEGF and IL-18 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) in 5 groups: SAP, UAP, AMI, OMI and the controls. Results The serum VEGF levels were significantly elevated in patients with CHDand differed significantly compared with control group (t'=9.094, P<0.01).The changesof VEGF in patients in the 3 groups (UAP, AMI and OMI) differed significantlycompared with the controls (t=5.808~11.794, P<0.01), but the levels between patientswith SAP and the controls had no statistical significance (t=0.184, P>0.05).The SAP,UAP, AMI and OMI patients had remarkable statistical significance between each other(F=65.0060, q=3.1099~18.1068, P<0.05, 0.01).The serum IL-18 levels weresignificantly elevated in patients with CHD, and differed significantly compared withthe controls (t'=6.638, P<0.01).Every group from SAP, UAP, AMI and OMI differedsignificantly compare with the controls(t=2.232~7.506, P<0.05, 0.01).The four groupshad remarkable statistical significance between each other (F=30.1670, q=3.5907~12.2896, P<0.05, 0.01), except SAP vs OMI (q=1.4275, P>0.05).The elevation ofVEGF and IL-18 had an relationship (r=0.5322, P<0.01).Conclusions The serum VEGF and IL-18 levels may be elevated during theprocess of CHD, and the two markers maybe have an relationship in the process ofCHD.Combination of quantitative determination of VEGF and IL-18 is valuable fordiagnosis of CHD,as well as for investigation of the pathophysiological mechanism ofthis disorder.
