Objective: The morphological characteristic, photosynthesis character, seed protein electrophoresis, peroxidase zymogram of leaves, root character and root weight, the content of chemical constituent and HPLC fingerprint between Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge. and Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge.var.alba C.Y.Wu et H.W.L. were studied systematically, which provide basic foundation for fine germplasm selection of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge. and the quality evaluation of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge.var.alba C.Y.Wu et H.W.L..Methods: The diversity of morphological character, photosynthesis character, genetic character, the character that showing yield, the content of chemical constituent and HPLC fingerprint between Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge. and Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge.var.alba C.Y.Wu et H.W.L. were compared using the basic methods in pharmaceutical botany, medicinal plant cultivation, plant physiology and pharmacognosy. The net photosynthetic rates were measured with CIRAS-1. The plant character and the character that showing yield were measured. The protein band of seed and peroxidase band of leaves were studied by gel electrophoresis. The extractum content was determined in accordance with China pharmacopeia. The content of tanshinoneâ…¡A and salvianolic acid B were determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).Results:The morphological characteristic of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge.var.alba C.Y.Wu et H.W.L.were similar to Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge., the numerical value of the plant height, flowering woods and the seeds quantity for the latter were higher than that of the former. The light saturation point of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge. was higher, while its light compensation point was lower. The seed protein electrophoresis band of both Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge.and Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge.var.alba C.Y.Wu et H.W.L. was at equal place, but the peroxidase band of leaves showed marked difference. Both the content of chemical constituent and HPLC fingerprint of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge. and Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge.var.alba C.Y.Wu et H.W.L. were different unobviously. Conclusion : There are certain genetic differences but little quality difference of medicinal material between Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge. and Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge.var.alba C.Y.Wu et H.W.L.. So, the latter should be calssified as Radiex et Rhizoma Salviae Miltiorrhizae rather than as a new medicinal material. The net photosynthetic rates and root weight of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge. were significantly higher than that of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge.var.alba C.Y.Wu et H.W.L.. In production, Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge. should be cultivated to achieve more profit, while salvia miltiorrhiza Bge.var.alba C.Y.Wu et H.W.L.could be preserved as a germplasm. Whether salvia miltiorrhiza Bge.var.alba C.Y.Wu et H.W.L. was a variety or a variant to Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge., more research should be done.
