Objective:The main aimof this study is to analyse the pattern of different classifications of IBS,using the TCM way of syndrome differentiation. The secondary aim is to try to establish,if any,a pattern of linkage between western and TCM classification of IBS patients. These may be used as theoretical basis for the use of combination of western and TCM in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of IBS in the future.Method:A questionnaire was designed(Attachment I).The questionnaire was distributed during a public seminar on IBS in Singapore and completed questionnaire were collected. Completed questionaire which met the criteria(127) were selected to be used in this study. In Nanjing, identical questionnaire was used and 49 sets were collected. Results:â‘ Based on TCM classification using syndrome differentiation, most of the patients in Singapore belongs to the group "Imbalance of Liver and Pi"(36%),followed by the group "Stagnation of Qi of Liver"(29%),then "Weakness of Pi and Wei"(18%) and lastly "Heatiness of Chang Fu"(17%);Results from Nanjing shows that 48%belongs to "Imbalance of Liver and Pi",followed by 35%of "Weakness of Pi and Wei",then 22%of "Stagnation of Qi of Liver".No cases were collected for "Heatiness of Chang Fu" in nanjing.â‘¡Based on western classification, the pattern of distribution of IBS patients for Singapore is 36%for IBS-D and IBS-A,28%for IBS-C;and that of Nanjing is 74%IBS-D, 20%of IBS-A and 6%of IBS-C.Conclusion:â‘ Most IBS patients,in Singapore and Nanjing, belongs to the class of "Imbalance of Liver and Pi".â‘¡In term of western classification, most IBS patients in Singapore falls under the class of IBS-S and IBS-A while those in Nanjing falls under the class of IBS-D.â‘¢From this study,it can be established that there is a direct relationaship between "Heatiness of Chang Fu" and IBS-C.â‘£No direct relationships can be established for other classifications.
