Objective:To observe the clinical effect of applying tonifying therapy by lifting and thrusting needling in treating post-stroke patients of the yin deficient syndrome.Method:Sixty post-stroke patients from MingShi and YuChun Chinese Medical Clinics in Taiwan were chosen to participate in the study.Their diagnostic requirements were met according to the Forth National Symposium of Cardiovascular Disease Diagnostic Standards held in 1995 and the Chinese Medical diagnostic standards of stroke in 1996.The patients were randomly divided into treatment and control groups. The patients were both treated with the same set of acupoints, but the treatment group used the lifting and thrusting tonifying method, while the control group used electro-acupuncture. They were treated every other day for a total of 15 treatments. The patients' progress was observed according to the criteria set in 1996 for stroke diagnostic standards. Results:The total effective rate of the lifting-thrusting tonifying needling treatment group was significantly higher than that of the control electroacupuncture group(p<0.05).The symptoms were relieved significantly after treatment in both groups(p<0.05),but the change in the treatment was more prominent(p<0.05).Their Barthel activity of daily living(ADL) score significantly improved after treatment in both groups(p<0.05),but the change in the treatment group was more significant(p<0.05).The neurological function in both groups significantly improved after treatment(p<0.01),but the change between the groups was not very significant(p>0.05).
