Objective: To study expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor(bFGF) in invasive and non-invasive pituitary adenomas and their relevance and discuss the relationship of them with the invasive growth of pituitary adenoma. Methods: Pituitary adenoma tissue samples of 55 cases,of which 30 cases were invasive, non-invasive there were 25 cases, the use of HE staining was to observe the organization, structure and arrangement of pituitary adenoma cells, and expressions of VEGF and bFGF were determined by immunohistochemical technique in the specimens.Results:①P athological features of HE staining between invasive and non-invasive pituitary adenomas are not easy to distinguish under the light microscope, which shows the cell hetero- morphism, large nuclear, nucleoli evident, the significant proliferation of mesenchymal cell and the hyperplasia of the capillary.②The positive expression rates of VEGF were 70% in 30 cases of invasive pituitary adenomas and 36% in 25 cases of non-invasive pituitary adenomas (χ2=6.36,P<0.05),and bFGF were respectively 73.3% and 44%(χ2=4.89,P<0.05),two groups have significant difference.③Expressions of VEGF and bFGF in pituitary adenomas have no significant relationship with patients'age, gender and endocrine function of the tumor(P>0.05),but there is significant correlation between the tumor size and expressions of VEGF and bFGF (P<0.05). The bigger the tumor size is,the higher the degree of expressions is.④There is a positive correlation between VEGF and bFGF expressions in invasive pituitary adenomas (r=0.508, P=0.004).Conclusions: Over-expressions of VEGF and bFGF and the invasive growth of the pituitary adenoma are closely related, with a synergistic effect between the two,and they can reflect the biological behavior of the pituitary adenoma.
