ObjectiveStudy the level and differentiation of Vitamin A of School-age children in the Dongxiang and Bonan ethnic ghettos.MethodsOne hundred and fifty-one School children aged seven to thirteen were sampled from rural areas in the Dongxiang ethnic ghettos from Dongxiang Autonomous County of Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province. Eighty-five School children aged seven to fiftteen were sampled from rural areas in the Bonan ethnic ghettos from Jishishan region, Gansu Province. The Vitamin A level in serum was detected using the fluorescence method. Fifty-seven School children aged seven to fourteen were sampled from these two rural areas between the Dongxiang and Bonan ethnic ghettos to study the level differentiation.Results1. In the horizontal analysis, the average level of Vitamin A in serum was 1. 27μmol/L for School children aged seven to thirteen in the Dongxiang region. Of all the one hundred fifty-one School children, there were 5 VAD(accounted for 3.3%),19 SVAD (accounted for 12.6%)and 25 Suspicious SVAD(accounted for 16.6%). There is statistically significant difference in different genders. In different age groups, children's vitamin A in serum gradually increased at the normal rate. The trend of SVAD and suspicious SVAD incidences gradually reduced as the children grow up.2. In the horizontal analysis, the average level of Vitamin A in serum was 1. 80μmol/L for School children aged seven to fiftteen in the Bonan region. Of all the eighty-five School children, there were 1 SVAD (accounted for 1.2%)and 8 Suspicious SVAD(accounted for 9.4%). There is statistically significant difference in different genders. In different age groups, children's vitamin A in serum gradually increased at the normal rate. The trend of SVAD and suspicious SVAD incidences gradually reduced as the children grow up.3. In the comparative analysis of these two rural areas, the average level of Vitamin A in serum was 1.41μmol/L for school children aged seven to fourteen in the Dongxiang region, and of all the fifty-seven samples, there were 4 SVAD (accounted for 7.0%)and 10 Suspicious SVAD(accounted for 17.6%). The average level of Vitamin A in serum was 1.67μmol/L for school children aged seven to fourteen in the Bonan region, and of all the fifty-seven samples, there were 1 SVAD (accounted for 1.7%)and 7 Suspicious SVAD(accounted for 12.3%).There is statistically significant difference in different national and age groups, and no difference in SVAD and Suspicious SVAD.ConclusionThe phenomenon of VAD for school-aged children has been a little, but there mostly exits SVAD and Suspicious SVAD in the Dngxiang region. And in the Bonan region, there mostly exits SVAD and Suspicious SVAD. Apart from continuing to control VAD, the intervention of Vitamin A supplementation should focus on children suffering from SVAD and suspicious SVAD.
