Objective To introduce a new technology for cutting and expansion of autologous skin. The theoretical analysis and appraisal led to the design of the punching machine for skin-piece making and a prototype was formed, as the guidance machine development.Methods Through a retrospective analysis of the current auto-skin expansion methods, their strengths and weaknesses were compared respectively in the research.Based on the need of clinical application, the basic requirement of skin-graft-making machine was raised in terms of sterilization, process of dermatoplasty, habit of surgeon and environment. The advantage of the new autologous skin cutting expansion method was reflected in the design of machine and showed by rhetorical expansion ratio by calculation. According to the biological characteristics of the skin, the geometric shape of cutting edge and sharpness level of cutting blade were analyzed for the sake of decreasing the damage of free skin graft. Meanwhile. the requirement of the carriers to transport the skin before and after punch was conducted.Results According to the needs of the actual clinical works and design requirements, a three-dimensional picture of skin-graft-making puncher was drawn and a prototype was formed. In view of the analysis the structural composition of the prototype and functions of various parts, the design was verified whether it satisfied the requirements.Conclusion It is showed that the design of skin-graft-making puncher was precision and feasible. The prototype can guide the development of the machine, with prospect of clinical application.
