ObjectiveThis clinical controlled study makes objective evaluation of the curative effect and safety of applying electric needle acupuncture to treat cervicalspondylotic radiculopathy.MethodsThe subjects are cervicalspondylotic radiculopathy patients who were received in Chinese Medicine clinics. The research takes the randomized controlled trial methods and classifies subjects into the Treatment Group (Electric Needle Group) and the Controlled Group (Needling Group) with 35 patients in each group. Before and after the treatment, observe the clinical symptoms and body signs of the subjects every week and record. Also, undertake the urine, blood and stool routine tests, electrocardiographic test, ALT and BUN once before and after treatment. Refer to the Chinese Medicine Disease Diagnostic and Evaluation Standard issued by State Administration of Chinese Medicine in 1994.Collect the clinical material in time after the clinical research. Establish a database with software Epi Data 3.01. Analyze and compare the total effective power, the clinical symptoms and body sign improvement after treatment and finally objectively evaluate the clinical effect and safety.Statistic methods:The classified material is processed with 2 test. The ranked material is processed with Wilcoxon rank sum test (rectification). The comparison of the average of the two samples takes t test or Wilcoxon rank sum test. The self circa comparison takes pair t test or Wilcoxon pair rank sum test. Analyze with software SPSS 17.0. StatisticsResult The interclass index comparison before treatment has no obvious difference and the interclass equilibrium is basically achieved. The Treatment Group has equivalent effect with the Controlled Group in the disappearance rate of body signs including fidgety, headache, vertigo, cervical motion, upper limbs'numbness, positiveness of omia plexus distraction test, the increase of intervertebral foraman change and physiological curvature change, hyperostosis, vertebra tilt and double contour sign difference, ect.The Treatment Group is superior to the Controlled Group in the disappearance rate of cervico-shoulder pain, upper limbs'numbness and pain and the decrease of upper limbs'muscle force and in the improvement of the Clinical Symptoms'Score, Chinese Medicine Symptoms'Score, VAS and Pain Index Score.Compare the curative effect of the Chinese Medicine syndromes of the two groups and the author finds the difference has no significance. The Treatment Group's clinical recovery rate is 22.8%, the excellence rate is 42.8%, the effective power is 22.8% and the total effective power is 88.6% while those of the Controlled Group are 20.0%,37.1%,31.4% and 88.6% respectively. The difference has no statistical significance. It indicates that the two groups achieve equivalent curative effect in the aspect of improving Chinese Medicine syndromes.ConclusionThrough the clinical research of the curative effect of applying electric needle to treat cervicalspondylotic radiculopathy, the following conclusions may be drawn:1. Applying the electric needle therapy to treat cervicalspondylotic radiculopathy has significant curative effect in improving some observation indexes and it's obviously better than that of the Controlled Group. It indicates that it has confirmed effect and can be applied as an effective method to treat cervicalspondylotic radiculopathy.2. The electric needle has synergistic effect in treating cervicalspondylotic radiculopathy. Its functional mechanism is related to improving the blood circulation, solving accretion, releasing pressure, promoting the transportation and degradation of inflammatory substances and promoting the recovery of the excitability of nerve tissues. Further discussion is needed for the explanation of the exact functional mechanism.3. Applying the electric needle therapy to treat cervicalspondylotic radiculopathy is economical, safe and effective and is worth of being further recommended in clinical treatment.
