[Objective]The objective of this study was to observe the clinical therapeutic efficacy of Shuang Bai San in relieving liver cancer pain in patients with primary liver cancer and to find an effective, safe, economical and assistant medication in treating the cancer pain.[Methods]30 patients with primary liver cancer pain were divided randomly into the treatment group (16 patients) and the control group (14 patients). All patients were received 7 days treatment of Shuang Bai San(in treatment group) or placebo (in control group) by external application. To investigate the clinical therapeutic efficacy of Shuang Bai San in relieving cancer pain, the numerical rating scale (NRS) scores of pain, pain time in 24 hours, sleep time in 24 hours and side effects were compared among two groups.[Results]After 1 hour and 3 hours treatment, the NRS scores were similar in two group, which decline both in treatment group and control group (P>0.05). However, after six hours treatment, the differences between the two groups were obvious. The NRS scores in treatment group was lower than before treatment, when the control group scores were higher than before treatment, statistically significant (P<0.05). The results suggested that Shuang Bai San could relieve primary liver cancer pain. During 6 hours treatment, the NRS scores were lower than the scores before treatment. The optimum treatment time was 1 hour. The mean values of pain time were close between treatment group and control group in the first four days. From the fifth to the seventh day, the mean values between two groups were different. The treatment group trended to short the pain time and to increase the sleep time compare with the control group, while the pain time and sleep time of control group were not improved in the first 3 or 4 days, respectively. After the treatment of Shuang Bai San, neither hepatic nor renal impairments were seen. No obvious adverse reactions of hematopoietic system were seen. Some patients were found slight discomfort after the treatment, such as pruritus, blisters and abdominal distension. However, the occurrence rate was low (5%), and no obvious difference between treatment group and control group were seen.[Conclusion]In conclusion, the Chinese Medicine Shuang Bai San had effective clinical curative effect in relieving primary liver cancer pain. After treated with the Shuang Bai San, the pain from cancer was alleviated and the sleep times of patients were lengthened. The treatment with Shuang Bai san was little side effects, and easy to performance. It was an effective, safe, unexpensive Chinese Medicine to relieve primary cancer pain. The analgesic effect could be maintained when continued treated with Shuang Bai San 6 hours a day, at least 4 days.
