Object To compare the clinical outcome of Ni-Ti shape memory alloy embracing fixator and reconstruction plate fixation in treatment of displaced or comminuted midshaft fractures of the ulna and radius.Methods There were 56 patients with displaced or comminuted midshaft fractures of the ulna and radius surgically treated with either Ni-Ti shape memory alloy embracing fixator and reconstruction plate fixation.The patients were divided into two groups according to fixation methods, Ni-Ti shape memory alloy embracing fixator (26 patients at average age of 27.1 years) and reconstruction plate fixation (30 patients at average age of 28.1 years).All patients were followed up for mean 12 months and forearm function using forearm assessment.Results Compare with reconstruction plate fixation group, Ni-Ti shape memory alloy embracing fixator operating more simpler had shorter operation time and less blood,smaller wound incision (all P<0.05).However,there was no statistical difference in aspects of hospital stay,the time of removing fixation bone union rate between two groups (all P<0.05)Conclusion The Ni-Ti shape memory alloy embracing fixator is better than reconstruction plate fixation in treatment of midshaft fractures of the ulna and radius.
