| Purpose:To observe and compare the management of blood glucose levels of subjects with Type 2 Diabetes mellitus when using only Western medicine, and when using Western medicine in conjunction with Ganoderma lucidum, in order to establish if there is merit in alternative treatment. The study also investigates whether the use of Ganoderma lucidum has any effect on reducing complications in the subjects.Method:50 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Subjects were randomized into two groups, each group of 25 subjects. The control group was given regular oral diabetic medication, whereas the experimental group took dry extract of Ganoderma lucidum in addition to regular oral diabetic medication for a period of 3 months.3months after the trials begun, blood glucose levels of both groups were recorded. A follow up was conducted with the subjects from both groups 12 months from trial onset. Blood glucose levels were re-measured. Blood glucose levels were compared within groups, and comparisons were made between groups based on the survey to investigate differences in blood glucose level, physical and mental health after trail period.Result:After 3 months, both group showed lower blood glucose level, the experimental group showed more improvement in most symptoms.12 months after the study commenced, it was found that both groups showed some changes in blood glucose level, the experimental group were still exhibiting lowered blood glucoslevel and reduce or stop the amount of medication prescribed. No subject reduces the amount of medication prescribed in control group. Conclusion:Prolonged use of Ganoderma lucidum has been shown to have produced improved most subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus to lower blood glucose level, in particular with people suffering from long term metabolic illnesses. Some noted benefits especially for the senior patients include improvements in the cardio-vascular system, particularly the heart and blood pressure, sleep, and mood. While Ganoderma lucidum is not a replacement for Western medication, we would highly recommend it as a supplement, an Alternative therapies to Western medication, to help alleviate symptoms and improve the quality of life of patients. |
