Fang Gan, whose courtesy name Xiong Fei(809~886 AD): born in Tonglu Muzhou(Tonglu in modern-day Zhejiang Province): is a famous recluse poet in Late Tang Dynasty. Fang Gan's fame for poems was very high:"Guang Ming,and in between the verses,river south and were not",so he was followed as the example of his contemporaries. Masters in various dynasties spoke highly of his poems, but so far the research on Fang Gan has not been systematic and comprehensive enough. In that case, this essay will further explode and discuss Fang Gan and his poems.This essay is made up of four parts:The first part is mainly a biographical study of Fang Gan. His exact death year, native place and secluded place and years are exploded on the basis of existing literature. After textual research, this essay argues that Fang Gan was born in Tonglu Muzhou in Emperor Xianzong Four Years (809 AD), died in Emperor Xizong Guangqi Er Years (886 AD) and secluded at Jinghu under the reign of Huichang, Emperor Wuzong.The second part deals with the main ideological contents of Fang Gan's poems on the basis of poetry text. This part can be divided into three aspects: the first aspect is the poems about his seeking for official positions and his interpersonal communication, which unveils the poet's life experience and trace; the second aspect mainly introduces the poems Fang Gan wrote when he secluded in Jinghu to further reveals the influence of his seclusion on his poetic creation; the third aspect is concerned with Fang Gan's Buddhist poetry, which introduces his communication between Buddhists or Taoist priest and his experiences of visiting Buddhist and Taoist temples, to study the influence of Buddhism and Zen Buddhism on him.The third part mainly discusses the artistic characteristics of Fang Gan's poems. The artistic characteristics are studied in two levels combined with the poetic features of the poet. Fist of all, the elegant and sweet style of his poems is analyzed; secondly, the expressive technique of his poetry creation which emphasizes his careful selection of precise words and sentences and the appropriate classical allusion is analyzed as well.The forth part mainly deal with his status in poetry field in Tang Dynasty. His talents were not recognized, but he refused to be decadent. He was well known as a recluse poet and won praise and admire of his counterparts in his generation and the next generations as Jinghu Skilled Recluse. He was one of the representatives of the poetic style of landscape poetry."A poet in poverty writes well". His poems inspired alone in the far-fetched extravagant and vulgar poems in Late Tang Dynasty and occupied a prominent position in the poetry world of Late Tang Dynasty.
