"Kesi"is one of the high-frequency words in Modern Chinese Language. The reason for"Kesi"to be a high frequency word is inseparable with it could be used in multiple contexts, express rich semantics, pragmatic commitment to diverse communicative functions are. However, the academic circles of the"Kesi"lay more research on the angle of lexicology. So far, I have not yet found any specialized research works on"Kesi". A study on such high-frequency words as"Kesi", is quite meaningful on having a deeper understanding of"Kesi"s' core semantic and grammatical function, exploring reasons for becoming a high-frequency words, for the understanding and grasping on similar function words like"Kesi". In this paper, we use synchronic-diachronic, comparative analysis and other methods, combining theory of grammar with syntax of"three planes"theory, the principles of linguistic economics, text linguistics theory. By the premise of a large text corpus, we started our study.A diachronic investigation has done on the grammaticalization of"Kesi": Song is a watershed of"Kesi"into a word. To the Southern Song Dynasty, the notional word"Kesi"has formed lexicalization fully. Then, the adverb"Kesi"which means emphasizes and determination has finished grammaticalization into conjunctions of turning relation. Reasoning mechanism, as well as the principle of linguistic economics are the external causes leading such changes. Interaction between syntactic units, adhesion between adjacent words and the interlinked nature of the inherent semantic change are the internal reasons.By comparison of similar terms as"Kesi", we find the flexible syntactic positions: it could be used both in front of a sentence and in a sentential position, in which play a connection role both in a complex sentences or sentence groups."Kesi", a rich semantic representation: it could strengthen certainty, extent exaggeration, suggest, topical transference, contrast between positive and negative, and answer questions. These rich semantic functions cannot be completely replaced by some other similar words."Kesi"also has diversity pragmatic functions. The tone of rich presentation functions, which able to express statements, questions, sighs and some other imperative mood. Diverse evidentiality and expression of modality, the true-value judgments, emphasizing, implication and so on ,all of these could fulfill a variety of communicative purpose. The last function of"Kesi"is discourse marker, mainly in the topic of tagging, explicit, and simplification function, "subjective" function and focus-pointing function.
