On the basis of fieldwork and the historical documentary research, this paper adopts the methods of contrastive linguistics, cultural linguistics and other across-subject theory, which have been brought together to investigate and research Han proverbs and Thai proverbs. This has been achieved by illustrating, classifying and describing the Han proverbs and Thai proverbs to demonstrate their similarities and differences with the aim of finding out the ontological features and the cultural features of Han proverbs and Thai proverbs.This paper is discussed in four sections.The first section is a preface, which clarifies the reason, the purpose, the significance, the adopted theory and methods used in the writing of this paper and also the relevant material sources. It specifically introduces the present situation of this research in China and Thailand, and finds there has been very little achievement in the field of comparative study on Han proverbs and Thai proverbs to date.The second section refers to the comparison of ontology of Han proverbs and Thai proverbs, which at first introduces the different definitions of proverb given by Chinese and Thai scholars. Next, it defines proverb from the point of view of this paper and the principle used in selecting the material in this research and then goes onto compare the structure and content of Han proverbs and Thai proverbs with respect to four aspects such as phonetic features, lexical features, grammatical features and rhetorical features.The third section is about the comparison of the cultural implication of Han proverbs and Thai proverbs. It analyses the proverbs which can reflect respective religious beliefs, views on values, convention and social structure.The fourth section is conclusion. The similarities and differences of Han proverbs and Thai proverbs as mentioned fully demonstrate the generality and individuality of human cognition. There has been a lot of research done by scholars in China and Thailand with respect to the collection of their respective proverbs. However, up to date, the research into comparative study, especially, relevant systematic comparative study on Han proverbs and Thai proverbs has been very limited. Thus, it is necessary to have further investigation and research in this field.
