As a new military force suddenly rising in the northern part of China, National Army, built up all alone by Feng Yuxiang, has played a decisive role in the modern and contemporary history of China. Its entrance into Gansu Province in 1925 has had unprecedented social impact on Gangsu Province. Since it was located in the remote northwestern part of China and far away from the central administrative and political complex without easy access to convenient transportation, Gansu was comparatively less influenced by the outside world. The advent of National Army as an outside force disrupted the balance of the local warlords in Gansu and triggered a series of military activities, causing tremendous suffering to the local common people. Therefore, it was National Army's top priority how to administer Gansu after its entrance into the province. The future generations'studies on National Army's performance in Gansu are mainly from the positive respects in that National Army's administrative measures undoubtedly have promoted the development of the local society. However, Gansu Province, as the home front of National Army, provides them with a large quantity of soldiers and material assistance, thus enabling them to fight in other battlefields. Gansu has barren land and common people's life is very tough; it's no wonder that National Army's conscription and fund-raising was another disaster for Gansu people. Chaos causes by the war, civil commotion, bandity and natural disaster altogether made the local society more poverty-stricken and turbulent. This paper, based on an objective comment on National Army's administration in Gansu, a correct understanding of National Army's nature, comprehensively measures National Army's influence on modern history of Gansu by overcoming the bias in the previous studies on Naitonal Army. Through an all-round probe into National Army's performance in Gansu, this paper as a tentative research, aims to foster further researches on National Army's entrance into Gansu Province.
