Study Of English Translation On Chinese Proverbs

Proverbs are short sentences widespread among the people; they are usually simple but brief to the point. They always appear in oral situation. Chinese proverbs reflect the culture feature of Chinese people. When translated Chinese proverbs into English, a translator should apply more English means of manifesting and tried to re-create the language style and rich connotation of them. In this thesis, the theory of domestication and foreignization was discussed first. According to the analysis, the author suggested mainly applying the method of domestication, putting the method of foreignization in the place of supplement. Then, the common ways of translation on Chinese proverbs were introduced. Finally, the cultural differences of Chinese and English were compared. For cultural default people need to find the way to compensation.
