On The Development And Characteristics Of China English

Nowadays, English has become an international language. Just like economic development, English has the trend of globalization and the characteristic of localization. As a variety in China, more and more attention has been paid to China English, because there exist the differences between Chinese and English. When describing unique things, ideas and phenomena in Chinese society and culture in English, people find lexical gaps, i.e. no corresponding words or expressions in English. Thus China English emerges, which enables Chinese unique culture, language, phenomena, ideas and tradition enter the international community through translation and at the same time it also absorbs many expressions with Chinese culture connotation and Chinese language characteristics.This thesis, on the basis of the previous researches done by others, introduces English globalization and its development in China; reviews the proposal of China English and its definitions; expounds Chinese way of thinking reflected in China English; analyses the common linguistic features of China English shown at linguistic levels of phonology, lexis, syntax and discourse and it discusses some suggestions on translating from Chinese to English in China English to help learners and regulate the development of China English. China English, as a combination of English and Chinese culture, unavoidably possesses some unique Chinese features. Some of them are common, stable, systematic and acceptable. Some are not due to the diversity of Chinese culture and misuse of the English language. So, the author thinks it necessary to figure out a way to regulate the development of China English to prevent it from developing into an unintelligible language.The Thesis aims at making some contributions to constant systemization and regulation of China English, which will promote the communication, understanding and cooperation between the East and the West.
