This study focuses on translation shifts in simultaneous interpretation. Based on a corpus analysis, this study identifies four major types of translation shifts, namely explicitation shift, constraint-induced shift, norm based shift and personal shift. Under this main classification, several sub categories have been proposed. The study examines various translation shifts in an attempt to find the underlying causes of them and strategies adopted by interpreters. Some translation shifts are desirable and facilitates the reception of the message. Other translation shifts undermine the quality of interpretation output. To cope with such shifts, interpreters can adopt various strategies such as anticipation, visualization, generalization, reformulation and etc.
