The Artistic Tendency Of Contemporary Poster Design

Posters have been playing an important role in social activities of human beings. Upto now, modern posters have got over a hundred years'history, which can date back to theend of the nineteenth century. Posters in earlier stages were important commercialadvertising media. With the advancement of technology and economy, especially thedramatic development of digital information media, the value of commercialcommunication of posters gradually dies away. Thus, great changes have taken place in thetheme and artistic expression of modern posters. The core of poster design has graduallyshifted to realms of social culture and ideology, and concept of creation and designlanguage also have displayed stronger artistic tendency.Posters are one of the most important forms of visual arts in graphic design andthereby have caught much attention of graphic designer and theorists of design. At present,the researches on posters mainly focus on innovations, formal language, historic style, andreinforcement of information of posters, or focus on a particular kind of posters such aspublic posters. Given there are few researches on the characteristics of integraldevelopment of modern posters, this thesis will explore and discuss this point.This thesis will elaborate on these following aspects: explanation of the notion ofartistic design of posters, categories of posters and their separate characteristics, featuresand causes of artistic tendency of posters, and ideas on artistic development of modernposters in China. The deep cause of artistic development of posters will be analyzed fromthese aspects: history, culture, society, psychology. By analyzing the development, statusquo, and artistic characteristics of posters, this thesis sums up the features of artistictendency of modern posters, and comes up with theoretical views of the artisticdevelopment of modern posters.
