As an important category of design disciplines, poster art has been involved in and has influenced the historical course of social development through its political, economic and cultural functions. If we connect the poster arts of each period in chronological order, it is almost a development history of visual modem culture and economy. With the sharp increase in international exchanges and trade, the pace of global economic integration has also been accelerated, the world has gone into an interlinked situation, and the international trend of design language has gradually replaced regional characteristics and become the mainstream. As an important means of international communication, the poster design is pushed to the forefront of society.China and Japan are neighbors, and they both are of the Oriental civilization countries with a long history. The two countries are closely linked not only in region, but also in history and culture. Japanese art design during the past 30 years achieved what the western countries have made during a century. The works of Tanaka, Shigeo Fukuda, Koichi Sato, Kenya Hara all include a profound traditional culture, embody careful humility and attach importance to details, aesthetic spirit, respect for nature. It is this spiritual support of culture that Japan can play an important role in the field of international graphic design. The rapid growth of economy and design in postwar Japan makes it one of the world's most influential new powers, a newborn powerful enough to form a balance with Western countries. While the design in China is relatively slow due to historical reasons and isolation. But with the economic opening up and the acceleration of global economic integration, especially China's accession to the World Trade Organization, the 29th Olympic Games held in Beijing, Shanghai 2010 World Expo was successfully held and a series of important and influential international events in the 21st century, China deeply integrates into the world, meanwhile Chinese design gets a rapid development and follows the internationalization trend. This paper makes a contrastive study of the poster design development through examining its origin and evolution, and tries to explore the similarities and differences between them in the modern times. The paper also summarize the integrity, heritage, national and international characteristics of Japanese poster design in modernization, so as to further the outstanding of the characteristics of poster art design and developmental laws. Many problems Japanese poster design face in development are exactly what we are facing. Perhaps the modern poster design in Japan is such a "key", the analysis of which may help us in embodying the national character and international development in our poster design and make clear the development direction of Chinese poster design. The exploration of modern poster design in Japan shows that the traditional Japanese art, culture and aesthetic concepts are preserved and carried forward to a certain level, and obtain international recognition through combination with modern design. Japan's experience teaches us that Chinese design field should also establish a national self-confidence and explore personalized design form and design language from our five thousand years cultural tradition. It can be said that a modern interpretation of tradition based on national culture in today's environment of multiple development has become a fashion. Japan's experience can give us inspiration, but there have been many differences except for similarities in traditional culture of the two countries, hence it is not wise to blindly imitate. This paper makes a comparative study of graphic works of modern national style, learn from Japan through comparison, and deepen our understanding of our traditional culture and knowledge of graphics so as to provide reference for the exploration and development of domestic national style graphic works. At the same time, we should also learn from the art designers of various countries and regions about how to integrate the national identity and international trend, how to combine traditional art and modern design, and how to combine the public demand with cultural taste. Only in this way can we truly integrate into the world culture and art trends, compete with "powerful culture", and achieve complete equality and genuine dialogue, as well as the ideal modern look of Chinese politics, economy, culture, art and design.
