In the metaphase of the last century, a new field of interdisciplinary research—Intercultural Communication(IC)obtained ever-accelerated development concerned with basic relations on general levels of cultures such as interpersonal contact, human and society as well as human and nature that cover several specific levels. As regards relevant disciplines and major professional fields, there are anthropology, sociology, psychology, linguistics, communicology, literature, cultural studies, and so on. Research orientations refer to intercultural communication theory, co-culture, subculture, nonverbal communication, communicative competence and communication studies. In addition, there exist such subjects as culture and language, culture and communication, communication and language, gender and culture, culture and conflicts, culture and world values as well as culture and races.Research on intercultural communication has made great progress at home during more than two decades. However, studies of intercultural communication almost, but not all, refer to general discussion on differences across cultures. Microscopic studies on individual"gene"of intercultural communication are relatively deficient. Cinemas serve as a sort of pioneering media, which can represent different cultural patterns of a nation and possess unparalleled cultural significance. Mainstream ideology, by means of cinemas, is conveyed to moviegoers. In recent years, the contents of many films have presented tendency of multiculturalism, especially convergence of Eastern and Western cultures. Such co-existence of different cultures offers us a new perspective of researching intercultural communication.Therefore, in this thesis, the author makes microscopic research on English lines of the film Kung Fu Panda to examine how differences and similarities of Chinese traditional culture and American mainstream culture are expressed. This thesis is based on the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, and dialogue theory. The author selects nine typical examples from English lines of this film which are regarded as an open dialogical text. Interrelations between Sino-American cultures are analyzed from perspectives of divergent dialogue (dialogues between film scenarists and Chinese audience as well as between film figures) and convergent dialogue (dialogue that reflect shared cultural values concerning Sino-American cultures).In addition, in the author's opinion, understanding of other cultures is not the final end, rather, how to take advantage of other cultures to enrich our own culture and effectively transmit own culture is the real purpose. In consequence, the author stakes out three cultural strategies of Chinese cinema in intercultural communication in light of successful experience of the film Kung Fu Panda.
