A Study Of E-C Translation Of Financial Texts From Perspective Of Skopos Theory

With the development of world economy, international financial activities hold strong influence towards the economic life of people. Many people get access to financial texts and thus the E-C translation of financial texts shows its importance in recent years. Financial texts contain the language materials used in banking, insurance and security fields. At the same time, financial texts cover a large area and involve many groups of people. According to the receivers of financial texts, financial texts can be divided into three types, with financial professional texts, financial news and financial textbooks as representatives respectively. Due to the cultural differences between English and Chinese, there are also differences between English and Chinese financial texts.Skopos Theory provides scholars with a new perspective of studying E-C translation. It attaches much importance to the skopos in translation in order to produce adequate target texts instead of equivalent texts. Many factors, such as receivers of target texts and initiators, shall be taken into consideration when the skopos of a translation action is fixed. The translation of different English financial texts may hold different purposes, which is suitable for the guidance of Skopso Theory.This thesis aims to discuss the translation strategies in E-C translation of financial texts within the framework of Skopos Theory. First of all, by Skopos Theory, translation criterion is adequacy instead of equivalence. The coherence and fidelity rules are the criteria subordinate to adequacy. Secondly, considering the characteristics of different financial texts, this thesis elaborates on the factors, mainly containing text types, receivers of target text and culture factors, which affect the skopos of the translation. Finally, combining with the above discussions, this thesis exhibits strategies used in financial translation from lexical, phrasal and syntactic levels. On the lexical level, technical terms and emerging vocabulary shall be translated with a fixed meaning, which welcomes the strategy of literal translation. Common words, which hold meanings associated with finance, are the difficult part of translation. Translators shall carefully choose the meaning of common words when they are used in a technical environment. On the phrasal level, metaphorical and exaggerate expressions, which can have special effects in texts, are often used in financial news reports. In order to comply with translation skopos, translators shall take the method of free translation and pay special attention to keep the effects of language. In addition, using Chinese idiom in E-C translation of financial news is also a common strategy. Idioms can make the language more concise and the article more colorful. Proper use of Chinese idioms in translation will attract the receivers'attention. On the syntactic level, when choosing translation strategies, translators shall pay attention to the structure of sentences and the environmental factors. Nominalization structure is welcomed by the writers of financial professional materials. Conversion of words is usually used when the sentences with nominalization structures are translated into Chinese. Addition and omission of words, changes of word order are strategies which help to achieve clearness and fluency of a sentence. In professional texts, long sentences are important problems, which call for the strategy of combining and dissembling of sentences. At the same time, passive voice is a characteristic of professional texts. On rare occasions, literal translation can be an efficient way. In general, sentences with passive voice shall be translated into active sentences with passive meanings.
