The Study Of The Impact Of Names On Perceptions Of Female's Facial Attractiveness

Name is an important symbol for a person different from another. It plays an important role in social life. Research shows that name will affect individual's self-expectations and self-awareness (Erwin P G, Calev A,1984). It also will affect the perception of physical attractiveness (Garwood S G, Cox L, Kaplan V., et al,1980) Previous studies showed that the name can make a first impression on physical attractiveness (Garwood S G, Cox L, Kaplan V., et al,1980), but it is just for medium attraction object. Is there still name's effect exist between attractive to people of different levels? At the unconscious condition, can the name still influent the assessment of facial attractiveness?This study based on the results of previous studies. Through three related behavioral experiments to study the name of the influence of female facial attractiveness in the Chinese cultural background. Test 1 explore when simultaneously present name and picture, the impact of name on perceptions of female's facial attractiveness; test 2 explore the impact on the condition of different time to present name and picture. Test3 explore the impact on unconsciousness by priming, test 3a used supraliminal priming and test 3b used subliminal priming. Compared to existing research, this study used a broader assessment of objects, including different levels of female attractiveness, it is closer to real life. It is the first time to discuss the name's influence under unconsciousness condition. In daily life, people do not realize that name will affect people's assessment of appearance, use the method of priming can explore the impact from another level.In conclusion:Under the cultural background of China, when the information of name and picture are identical, name plays the "enhanced" role:the higher attractive name would enhance the female's attractiveness who has an attractive appearance; the lower attractive name would reduce the female's attractiveness who own has no attractive appearance. When first to present name, the people have the lower assessment; no matter first or second present name, only the lower attractive photographs showing a bigger impact. Two kind of priming conditions produce different influences:under the supraliminal priming condition lower attractive name can enhance the assessment of lower attractive pictures, otherwise, under the subliminal priming condition lower attractive name can reduced the assessment of any pictures.In a word, this study is from conscious and unconscious to examined the impact of names on facial attractive.
