Krzysztof Kieslowski, one of the masters of art films, had left us many good films. My thesis focuses on Krzysztof Kieslowski's achievements of authenticity of the art cinema and the bright side of his films which is not highly noticed by others. His films may have a formalistic style of the European avant-garde cinema and some of his works look even unreal, however, according to Andre Bazin's understanding of film realism, Krzysztof Kieslowski achieved to show the real world of ordinary people's lives, which in his belief, controlled by the God of destiny. Unlike other scholars'comprehension that his works are all full of gloomy fatalism, I find Krzysztof Kieslowski also gave a good many of hope in his later works. In my thesis, the first chapter briefly introduces Krzysztof Kieslowski's life, his earlier works of documentaries and feature films and his traumatized experiences which led to his discovery of the meaning of life. The second chapter discusses Blind Chance from the aspect of "analyzing destiny". And the third chapter explores The Double Life of Veronique from the angle of "observing destiny". Chapter Four examines The Three Colors Trilogy which is to show Krzysztof Kieslowski's questioning of the meaning of life while in exploring of the reality of destiny. At present time, the Chinese government is encouraging the development of cultural products including film industry. However, what is not very ideal for Chinese film industry is that, we always want to compete with American movie industry by following the American way. That is to say, they emphasis too much on dazzling after effects, while ignored the content of the work, or even ignored the authenticity of film which Andre Bazin once pointed out----the aesthetic characteristic of photography is to show the truth, and this is precisely the nature of the art of film. Andre Bazin said that good films do not cheat the audience. Successful films will make the audience think films are the reality itself. However, unfortunately, many Chinese film directors lost themselves in confronting the strong cultural impact of the American movies. They can not grasp the distinction between "abstract" and "fictitious". Thus their works lost sincerity. The significance of this thesis is that to study Krzysztof Kieslowski and his films could be the guidance to enrich the cultural meaning of Chinese films.
