The Usage Of Three Cognate Chinese Characters Of Structural Particle "de" In 1920-1930s And Reasons Of This Differentiation

The structural particle "de"(的) is the most important function word in Chinese. Till 1919, there's still one character "的" signified as the structural particle "de". There are many researches on how "de" from the former character "底" into the later character "的", but there's no relevant research on the usage of three Cognate Chinese Characters "的" "底" "地" in 1920-1930s from an academic argue in 1919. Based on the research of historical development of the structural particle "de", this paper will describe the usages of the differentiated three cognate characters in this period of history, and explore the reasons of this differentiation.This dissertation describes the usages from two dimensions:one is using journals widely read by people at that time; the other is using the articles written by most famous writers such as Lu Xun, Chen Duxiu, Hu Shi and so on. Through these authentic language materials, we found the tendency of "de" is "底" slowly disappearing, "地""的" steadily used. This dissertation also makes great efforts to explore what caused this phenomenon. The reasons are as follows:1. There isn't unified usage for "底".2. It is hard to distinguish possessive words from adjectives, people hardly can grasp the usages of "底".3. The turning up of "底" is going against the language laws of most economical in using.
