The acceptance history of Tao Yuanming literature in Japan is well-established and long standing. In consideration of Tao Yuanming's influence on Japan, this thesis studies the transmutation and characteristics of its Japanese acceptance history from the perspectives of acceptance, influence, appraisal and understanding. This thesis can be divided into three chapters based on three periods during which Japanese literature has close relaitons with China. Chapter 1 focuses on the literatures of Asuka, Nara, and Heian periods. To be specific, it analyses when Tao Yuanming's works were introduced into Japan, mainly examines the works of Yamanoueno Okura and Otomo Tabito from Kaifuso and Manyoshu, and it also studies some works of Heian Period. Chapter 2 deals with Gozan literature, it analyses the Remarks on Poetry of Kokan Shiren and Chugen Engetsu. Chapter 3 studies the literature of Edo Period, centered around the literature works of Fujiwara Seika and Remarks on Poetry of Hirose Tanso. The first and third chapter also studies the evolution of the culture of Tao Yuanming chrysanthemum. In China, chrysanthemum has various cultural indications, and Tao Yuanming's literature made a lot of contribution to that. To some extent, chrysanthemum become a symbolization of him. This is accepted by Japanese literature, and it will be studied in this thesis.
