The Spring Festival couplet is unique part of Chinese traditional culture and a representative form of literature. With only several characters, it is usually rich in knowledge of Chinese language and Chinese culture. Meanwhile, it also reflects the way in which the Chinese cognize and think. Based on the intercultural communication theory, the paper researches on the Spring Festival couplet to find out the role it plays in teaching Chinese to the speakers of other languages and in promoting Chinese traditional culture in the intercultural communication context.The paper first discusses the origin of the Spring Festival couplet, which is the precondition that it is of high value in the intercultural communication context. Then, it analyzes its historical, linguistic, folkloristic, and psychologic characteristics. Historically, it discusses the five periods, namely, before the Republic of China, from the Republic of China to the establishment of the People's Republic of China, from the establishment of the People's Republic of China to pre-opening-up reform, opening-up period, and after 20th century; linguistically, it discusses the pronunciation, form, meaning and rhetoric; folkloristically, it discusses its form of writing and pasting, and the development; psychologically, it analyzes the couplet according to the Chinese'worship to Chinese language, world view, value view and way of thinking. After analyzing the knowledge of the Spring Festival couplet itself, the paper places it into the intercultural communication context, and states the feasibility of applying it into teaching Chinese to the speakers of other languages and puts forward its strategy, and strategy of using it in promoting Chinese culture as well.
