Study On The Translation Of International Business Contracts

With the deepening of economic globalization, international business exchanges between China and foreign countries are on the rise. International business contracts, as a means of specifying obligations and rights of the contractual parties involved, have been increasingly made. The translation of these business contracts has thus been playing a more important role and high-quality translations are urgently needed.However, since English contracts and Chinese contracts differ a lot in many ways, the translation of international business contracts poses great challenges to translators. To find a proper translation theory to guide the practice becomes a necessity. This thesis is attempting to explore in this direction. It studied from a new perspective—the Interpretive Theory—with the purpose of demonstrating the applicability of this theory to the translation of international business contracts and concluding some specific translation strategies to improve the practice.The thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter one is an introduction. Research background, research questions, methodology and layout of the thesis are included in this part. Chapter two reviews the Interpretive Theory, including its development, key concepts and translation criteria which the theory advocates. Chapter three goes into the international business contracts, from the definition, linguistic features to the general translation criteria of them. Chapter four is a linking part. It combines the Interpretive Theory and the contract translation together, aiming to prove the applicability of this theory both theoretically and practically. On the basis of chapter four, chapter five brings out specific contract translation strategies so as to improve the related translation practice. Chapter six is the conclusion part. It summarizes the research findings and limitations, also claims the prospect of this research.
