The thesis studies Wang Zuoliang’s translation thoughts and practice.Wang Zuoliang is a renowned scholar in foreign language world in China. He has notonly accomplished great achievements in English literature, literary history and comparativeliterature but also he is a dominant figure in the field of translation in China.He establishedhis status with innovative theoretical thoughts and considerable translation works. Histranslation works include poem, essay, novel and drama. His translation and study of Burns’are considered as first-class in China. His translation thought covers stylistics, culture etc. Hisdistinct views on translation and valuable practice has enriched the the theory and practice ofdomestic translation. Therefore, Wang Zuoliang’s theoretical thoughts on translation andpractice deserve our further study.The thesis intends to do research on Wang Zuoliang, the translation theorist andtranslator. By analysis of his translation thought and feature and contrastive studies of WangZuoliang’s and other translators’ translation in terms of cultural factor, reader’s response, styleetc. In translation thoughts, on the basis of inheriting the fine traditional translation, WangZuoliang developed and enriched Chinese translation theory in line with stylistics and culture.At the same time, he abandoned the form translator’s evaluation on Yan Fu and highly praiseYan Fu’s concern for target reader, which is very praiseworthy at that time. In addition, inlight of translation practice, many of Wang Zuoliang’s translation works has become classics,such as the representative works Rober Burns’ A Red, Red Rose as well as Francis Bacon’s OfStudies. The Thunderstorm is his Chinese-English masterpiece.The thesis is made up of three main chapters in addition to an introduction and a conclusion.In the first place, it’s a brief introduction of the purpose, significance, present research and thebasic structure of this paper. Chapter Two is an introduction of Wang Zuoliang’s achievementsand the factor influencing on his translation activities. Chapter Three intends to carry out asystematic study of his theoretical thoughts mainly covering:combination of stylistics andcultural studies with translation studies; views on verse translation; the function of translation and concern for target text readers. In Chapter Three, after analyzing Wang Zuoliang’stranslation, it demonstrates his importance and preciousness of translation, and highlightshis significance and accomplishment for translation theory exploration. Chapter Four is casestudies of Wang Zuoliang’s translation practices including the famous A Red, Red Rose, OfStudies and Thunderstorm. Finally, the conclusion is a retrospective summary of the mainidea explored in the previous parts.
