Li Shutong is widely viewed as one of the most influential artists and art educators. He has played a pioneering role for the development of music education in modern China. His thoughts on music education make a huge impact for that time and later. We gain a good deal of enlightenment from his thoughts which are very helpful to solve current problems in modern music education.This thesis consists of three sections:In the first section, we begin with the introduction of Li Shutong's life. Then the impact of his family background on artistic accomplishments is reviewed. Finally we introduce his artistic activities and music creations during his overseas study. All of these play a significant role in the forming of his thoughts on music education.In the second section, we sum up Li Shutong's thoughts on music education from three aspects. The first one is'the power of personality'. It means that educators should love students and practice what they preach in the music education. The second one is that educators should improve their own culture before they engaged in education and they also should implement the ideology in daily education practice. The third one is'student-oriented' It reflected in respecting students, appreciating their accomplishment and teaching them in accordance with their aptitude. These three aspects are the core ideas of Li Shutong's thoughts on music education.In the third section, we analyze the impact of Li Shutong's thoughts on modern music education. On the one hand, we should learn the useful part of his thoughts to solve the current problems of music education; on the other hand, we should objectively recognize the historical limitations and promote a better development.
