With an extraordinary life full of frustration, Bakhtin had a very rich of cultural works, including philosophy, cultural studies, literature, linguistics, and many other research areas. He proposed "polyphonic novel", "carnival culture", "trans-linguistics" and other ingenious theories. Maybe for his obscure theories, or for some political reasons, Bakhtin's theories had been ignored for years. But since they are been found, the theories have caught attention worldwide and has fueled hot debates. They even led to "Bakhtin fever". While Bakhtin's theories are widely used in various fields, his linguistics research also catches more attention by researchers who also have some fruitful research findings. But Bakhtin's linguistic thought is only being popularized, no one has attempted to initiate a dialogue with Bakhtin. This paper uses the theoretical analysis method combining philosophy and linguistics, to discuss Bakhtin's theory of trans-linguistic in four parts as follows:The first part introduces the trans-linguistic background of Bakhtin, analyzing how the neo-Kantian philosophy and Marxism philosophy influence his theory and discussing different philosophical main schools. The second part explains the content of linguistic theories of Bakhtin, which includes Lotman's semiotic theory of comparison, the relationship between symbols and ideology, discourse theory, and the role of discourse in the language. Then this part puts forward the nature of dialogue of trans-linguistic theory. The third part follows Bakhtin's linguistic theory's path of relating theory to practice and introduces of Bakhtin's interpretation of Dostoevsky's novels and the humanism embodied in his novels.Part IV summarizes the practical significance of Bakhtin's trans-linguistic theories. The first argument is the overall importance of his theory to contemporary literature. The second argument is to explore the importance of dialogue theory to modern literary studies.
