China, as a big tourist country, has received more and more attention from the outside world. The translation of scenic spots introduction plays a very important role in establishing the image of tourist industry in China. At present, many scholars have researched the tourist translation texts by different methods such as intercultural communication, skopos theory and dynamic equivalence and published many related papers. However, the quality of the tourist translation text is far from satisfying with less objectivity and practicality, incomplete analytical method or insufficient theoretical support. In order to overcome these defects, the paper is intended to analyze about 50 first hand texts of scenic spots introduction of Shaanxi province by the qualitative and comparative methods based on the relatively comprehensive theory—Relevance-Adjustability Theoretic Approach(RATA). The theory is put forward by Li Zhanxi after researching the Relevance Theory (RT) of Sperber and Wilson and the Adaptation Theory (AT) of Verschueren and the researching results of other scholars.RATA consists of the two intertwined processes: Discourse Interpreting Communicative Process (DICP) and Discourse Producing Communicative Process (DPCP). It means that the translator seeks for the related information in Source Text (ST) to obtain the communicative intention of the ST author and then uses the method of adaptation in Target Text (TT) to convey the communicative intention of the ST author to satisfy the needs of the TT readers. It concerns the cognitive aspects of the ST author, the translator and the TT readers among which the cognition of the translator is the focus. For obtaining the communicative intention of the ST author, the translator must take his own cognition and the author's cultural background, assumed cognition into consideration before he makes inference on the ostensive information of the ST author. Before the translator finds the optimal relevance, his cognition is uncertain. After finding the optimal relevance, he makes language choices by ways of variation, negotiation and adaptation in TT with the reference of the cultural background, assumed cognition and aesthetic expectation of the TT readers. As a result, the TT readers can obtain the communicative intention of the author by means of realizing the optimal relevance. In the process, the translator must adapt the cognitive level and aesthetic expectation of the TT readers. Otherwise, he can not smoothly convey the communicative intention of the ST author.The text of the tourist translation has the features such as appealing, culture and concision. These features should be combined with RATA during the analytical process. Through the application of the RATA, the following conclusions can be drawn: first, the C-E translation of scenic spots texts introduction is dealt with by exploiting culture implicature with the acceptable concise way; second, the cognitions of the author, the translator and the TT readers are three interactive and dynamic processes and third, RATA can be used to direct tourist translation.In brief, RATA provides a new perspective for tourist translation. We expect that the paper can bring certain inspiration for the future tourist translation.
