Tao Yuanming is one of the most outstanding poets in Chinese history of literature. Both of his moral character and poems exert wide profound influence. This point can be seen in the fact that the works of many men-of-letter embodied, more or less the authors' admiration for Tao Yuanming. Many of them mentionally imitated his life and literary creation. More than one thousand poems were produced with "Ni Tao"or "He Tao"as the title;moreover,a new school of poets-Qing Tan Shi Pai was formed which is characterized by the style of Tao's poems. They took Tao's style as common aesthetic temperament. Only more than one hundred poems of Tao are handed down to us and he did not achieve any great achievement in political area. At that time,he was known as a ~hermit" only, but how can he exert so wide repercussion in the society? Why did his moral quali~ty and poems have so great charm? the author of this thesis believed that "the rational spirits" is the connatation of Tao's characteristics. Tao's activities of life, action and aesthetics are based on a mature rationalism. His high level of character is equivalent to that of his active achievement. The rational spirits reflected in the contents of Tao's poems.Tao's poems are full of his reflectiion on the philosophy of society~life and nature. His experience shows the rational characteristics of sober and object.First of all, the age of Tao's was permeated by the social atmosphere in which people advocated to administer the state. In Wei dynasty and Jin dynasty, the thought of Lao Li and Zhuan Zi became the main ideological trend. Deeply influenced,Tao Yuanming established his model of life. He made the first attempt to practise his political ambition to exhibit his social value ,and then led a simple life in countryside to seek for his individual value. When thinking rationally about himself and the society, he found that his personality for the pursuit of nature couldn't go along with the society. For this reason,he was back to original purith and simplicity in order to achieve his second persuit. Second, when most people disgraced agriculture ,he firmly insisted on the pattern of life based on farming. He did some work in the farm by himself. Futhermore,he encouraged and guided the contempararies to take part in the the agricultural work, which display his high consciousness. Third, having led a pastoral life,he considered himself as a hermit and intentionally aestheticized and delightened his daily life. Fourth,at his time, many people were addicted to alcohol. Tao Yuanming was also fond of drinking, but unlike other people, he could have the rationality while drinking and keep himself aware of the natural personality, and get into a aesthetic world. Fifth, most people in Wei and Jin periods was painful and afraid of their limited life and took medicines in order to escape the frightening of death. On the contrary, Tao Yuanming kept his rational consciousness that life and death are unavoidable.2Taos s rational spirits had been combined into his creation of art, which was embodied by his selection of natural scenery, images, colors, languages and his emotion give the expression to the intuitional pursuit for aesthetics.Sufficient rationality and interests are Tao's aesthetic characteristics when the tendency of "Xuan Yan" poems were popular. Tao Yuanming could combine emotion, scenery, rationality and narration together to be a whole body. First ,Tao Yuanming was good at both embracing emotion among rationality and specificating rationhity by emotion. Second, Tao Yuanming had profound philosophy in his vivid description while readers can find certain rationality. Third, Tao Yuanming narrated his daily life in his poems under the view of rationality ,he could extract the common life into gereral rationality. In short, Tao Yuanming's rational spirits are the true reason for which his excellent character and poetic style are still full of charm for descendants.
