Most of the studies in China on the translation of English metaphors are concerned about the translation of English metaphors in literature, such as in poems, plays, novels etc. With regard to E-C translation of metaphors in everyday speech, there are very few systematical studies. Yet whether English metaphors in everyday speech are understood correctly and expressed appropriately is one of the keys to successful cross-cultural communication. In order to compensate for this, the author of the present thesis tries to illuminate the common existence and the translatability of English metaphors in everyday speech from the viewpoint of cognitive linguistics. This thesis introduces several workable translation methods such as literal translation, free translation, using similar or close Chinese metaphors, literal translation combined with free translation in E-C translation of metaphors in everyday speech. It is emphasized in the thesis that in the process of translating English metaphors in everyday speech, a translator should chooSe methods Ilcxihly to convey the metaphorical meaning of English metaphors according to certain translation principles (as Qtransfcrence of the meaning by context, acceptahility of a translation) and criteria (as Oliiithfulness, moothness).
