This paper attempts to put forward a notion that translation of English For Tourism (an important branch of ESP) should be done in a cross-cultural perspective, and it also tries to venfy the feasibility of this translation approach from two macro angles ?theoretical point of view and practical point of view Tourism has become an important industry undergoing rapid growth on a global scale The development of the travel industry has, in turn, exerted a tremendous influence on the economies and cultures of the world Tounsm creates the need to communicate with people of various cultural backgrounds The contacts between foreign visitors and us are an intercultural communication Given the frequent cultural exchanges in tourism industry, a further study into translation of English For Tourism in a cross-cultural perspective is a must That means translators of English For Tourism have to adopt cross-cultural awareness when rendering source language into target language so that the version in target language is more culturally acceptable, especially when rendering Chinese publicity materials into English As for tourism services, translation in a cross-cultural perspective aims at exploring efficient ways to relate to or communicate with foreign visitors who speak a different language and live in a different cultural context Translation plays a very important role in tourism services To be more accurate, translation can be construed as intercultural translation as well as interhngual translation The purpose of translation of English For Tourism is to provide foreign readers useful information, including culture-loaded information Cross-cultural communication (intercultural communication) is communication activities done by people of different cultural backgrounds Study of intercultural communication tries to solve the problems arising in communication between people of various cultural backgrounds by probing into the causes of communicative barriers and cultural conflicts and into the effective ways of avoiding communicative breakdowns In this sense, translation of traveling services from Chinese into English is an intercultural communication process between translators representing the source language culture and foreign readers representing the target language culture, and translation of English For Tourism done in a cross-cultural perspective is conducive to reducing communicative breakdowns and minimizing misunderstanding caused by want of cultural differences and cultural peculiarities In order to get satisfactory results in translation of English For Tourism, the translator should study the language features of English For Tourism, take the most important factors, namely, cultural factors and stylistic factors into account and accumulate profound knowledge of source language culture and target languagecultUre that wlll certalnly contr1bute to translatlng Engllsh For Tourlsm ln across-cultural perspect1ve A comblnatlon of translatlon technlques wlth cross-culturalawareness becomes an essentlal quallficatlon to evaluate and assess a translator'sabllltyTranslatlon of Engl1sh For Tourlsm 1n a cross-cultural perspectlve pUts speclalstress on lts own soclal functlons, and lt also paves way for translatlng Engllsh ForTourlsm ln a completely new angle, that 1s, taklng 1ntercultural communlcatlon factorslnio accoun and paylng speclal attelltlon to the verslons' lntelllglblllty and readabllltyTherefore, translatlon of Engllsh For Tourlsm done wlthln an lnterculturalcommunlcat1on 1s of great practlcal s1gnlficance...
