Tourism material translation, typical of intercultural communication, is expected to bridge the gap between cultures, over which, tourists can cross to have a good understanding of the historical sites, magnificence of rivers and mountains of target countries, and thus target cultures. Indeed, tourism usually serves as a means of cultural transmission, integration and protection, being intended to eliminate cultural differences, so as to successfully realize intercultural communication.Based on the scenic spots typical of Shandong Province, this paper explores on the C-E translation of Shandong tourism material from a cross-cultural perspective. Taking intercultural communication theory as the framework, this paper explores how the effective cultural transmission in intercultural communication can be realized by analyzing typical examples of the C-E translation of Shandong tourism material.Chapter One reviews the recent studies on C-E translation of tourism material, discussing major orientations. Besides, this chapter takes an overview of researches on cultural factors in the history of translation, introducing the theorists who contributed significantly to the cultural translation, as well as their points of views. These theorists include Eugene Nida, Peter Newmark, Susan Bassnett, Functionalists, Liu Miqing etc. Although differ with each other in form, theories put forward by these theorists on cultural translation share the similar view on the essence of cultural translation—the key point for cultural translation is to appropriately transmit the cultural connotation of source text (ST), which is held highly in tourism material translation from intercultural communication perspective.Chapter Two discusses the theory of intercultural communication and emphasizes the necessity of exploring tourism material translation by applying intercultural communication. Discussing translation with cultural factors as the core and based on relationships among language, culture and translation, the theory of intercultural communication regards translation as one of intercultural communication or intercultural cooperation activities. Thus, translation requires the translator not only to have a good command of languages and cultures of two countries, but also to be clear about the objectives of translating process and text function of ST and TT.Chapter Three analyzes the C-E translation of Shandong tourism material from a cross-cultural perspective. Mainly focusing on the C-E translation of proper nouns, set phrases featured with Chinese style, couplets, verses and culture specific words, this chapter elaborates how the cultural essence in ST can be transmitted appropriately in the C-E translating process while the TT is maintained readable for target readers.Chapter Four puts forward such strategies as addition and deletion of information, explanation, cultural analogy and paraphrase on the C-E translation of Shandong tourism material from the perspective of intercultural communication.In conclusion, based on the above discussion and analysis, this paper holds that (1) the illustration of cultural connotation of ST is highlighted in the C-E translation of tourism material specific to Qi and Lu cultures; (2) strategies adopted should be cultural transmission oriented and the TT is expected to accord with the reading habit of English readers with objectivity and concision; (3) the translator is required to cultivate his cross-cultural awareness in translation and be a commissioner of cultural transmission.
