This paper makes a study on neologism and its translation, mainly dealingwith Chinese and English, quoting abundant examples of new words andexpressions of Chinese and English over the last two decades. Altogether, the paper consists of four parts. The first part is the generalintroduction of the paper, including the current situation of neologism, thepurpose and significance of the research on neologism, the necessity oftranslating neologism, the plentiful research achievements on neologism and itstranslation during the past 20 years such as dictionaries of new words andphrases and some relevant academic monographs and treatises, the mention ofthe code switching phenomenon in the utilization of neologism and thetranslation techniques of neologism. The second part is about neologism. The writer presents a picture of the definition, classification, features and main sources of new words and phrases.Emphasis is placed on the analysis of thc prevailing code-switching phenomenon, which is seldom mentioned about in the papers and books concerning neologism. The writer tries to be objective, factual and calmly analytical in putting forwardthe guidance of crcating neologism──being explicit, necessary, complementaryand correspondent with conventionality, and quoting evidences to substantiatethe judgements on the trend of the development of neologism. The third part is the translation of new words and phrases.Following thesignificance of translating neologism, the principles of the translation areproposed──understandability, accuracy and the confirmation to commonpractice. The writer stirs up series discussions on the translation techniques andillustrates seven practical and popular methods of how to turn new words andexpressions between Chinese and English──equivalent translation, backtranslation, literal translation, free translation, translxteration, explanatorytranslation and bilingual hybrid translation, some of which are uniquely andeffectively applied to the translation of neologism. The last section concludes the paper.
