IT Words And Their Translation

With the development of science and technology, great achievements have been made in computers both in hardwares and in softwares. The information technology also has been made great progress because of it. These developments not only changed our life, but also brought many new technical terms to our vocabulary. This paper tries to make a summary on these overflowing new words and their translation.The paper is consisted of seven parts. The first part is introduction. It mainly introduces the relations between the development of science and technology and the producing of new words. The second part presents some major methods of word formation in the IT vocabulary, including compounding, blending, clipped words, old words with new meaning, etc. The third part analyses the unique features of the IT words with examples. The translation methods of the IT words, such as literal translation, liberal translation, transliteration, are stated in the fourth part. In the same part, a transliteration also representing the meaning is emphasized because it is difficult to achieve. In the fifth part, some confusing translations are listed and suggestions to the phenomenon of confusing translation are given e.g. there is no need to change the translation that has been widely accepted. The sixth part discusses some trends of IT words translation from English to Chinese, including short translations better than long ones, and the intranslatability. The last part is a conclusion to the paper.
