Environment-friendly urban design is an important way to measure the economic growth,social progress and spiritual of a country. It integrates a nation's social system,historical and cultural background,ecological status and scientific level. It's features strong space distinctiveness and penetrative ness. It is an urban public openness to harmonize natural ecological system and that artificial construction. A sound and artistic urban design is an important means to balance ecological system,upgrade cite environment,create distinctive culture,and to improve people's living standard.At the beginning of the paper,the author introduces some of the existing problems in current urban design,and than systematically discusses a few essential aspects of the field based on his personnel experiences,social investigation and abundant resources from both home and abroad. Mold of thinking and ways concerning modern urban design with Chinese characteristic is explored.The paper starts with the introduction of history,schools and concept of environment-friendly urban design. It than discusses the four fundamental theories in modern urban design;Firstly,designers should have a strong sense of ecological insight and with this basis to do their designs. Secondly,science and technology is an objective fact,it harmonizes natural landscape and human efforts,it should be the primary factor to be considered in modern urban design. Thirdly,humanitarianism,which reflects human behavior,human behavior,human spirit and human culture must be highly valued and therefore must be organically embodied in modern urban design. Lastly,a sustainable developing strategy for environment-friendly design is stressed and the paper proposes some ways for implementation of the strategy.
