In Xinjiang, teaching English to minority students at colleges and universities has its own characteristics. On the one hand, minority students have different educational background. On the other hand there is no suitable up-to-date teaching material and English language-teaching program for them. Minority students majoring in English use a traditional grammar-oriented book for their basic English course. The main purpose of the basic English course is to develop and improve students' ability in using English as a tool for communication. It is impossible to reach this goal following the traditional approach. It is necessary to raise teaching quality so as to meet students' needs as well as the needs of social development and economic construction. With this in mind, this paper attempts to discuss a communicative approach to the teaching of intensive reading with traditional textbooks. This paper aims to reveal that a communicative approach to teaching intensive reading with the traditional textbook makes up for the disadvantages from the traditional textbook and traditional approach.
