The Analysis on Mad Figures in The Traditional Peking Opera and Kunju Opera This article will take a close look at the mad figures in the traditional Peking and Kunju opera. According to the interpretation of the Chinese traditional medical science, I divided all the figures into three types: the real mad men, the pretending mad men and the similar mad men. The cause of the real madness is linked with the strike of personal experience or the supernatural things such as spirits and the ghosts. The mad man on the stage cause the audience to show pity for their unfortunate destiny or criticism for their bad deeds. Some figures pretended to be mad to avoid disasters or acted as mad men to tell the essence of the world in ironic tones. The similar madness extends the meaning of the madness, so the figures belong to this type has different meanings according to different drama texts. The mad persons on the stage acted in their own illusions and had special communications with the normal persons, so as to cause the performance more dramatic .The Chinese traditional opera is a kind of performance art, had an elaborate form of musical storytelling, the actors try to make the physical appearance of form more perfect to grasp the spiritual essence. So the mad figures on the stage are quite different from the insane people in the real life, their action obey the rules of the technique and try to be harmonious with the rhythm. The actors sometimes show their unique skills and make the mad figures more charming and fantastic.
