Adverb is the most numerous, the farflungest and the most complicated part-of-speech in the empty words of ancient Chinese. The study of adverb is of great significance to the study of ancient Chinese grammar. However, the actual study of adverb of ancient Chinese is not satisfying and many pendent problems are still exsisting. With a view to the reason mentioned above, I selected Chuang Tzu as subject, intending to give a complete study of adverbs of Chuang Tzu. The thesis divides adverbs of Chuang Tzu into seven categories: adverbs of inclusive scope, adverbs of time, adverbs of manner, adverbs of degree, conjunctive adverbs, Negative adverbs, modal adverbs.classifies evry group according their meaning, explores the semantic direction of some of the adverbs, concludes the grammar characteristic of every group. During the orderly descriptiong of every specific adverb, their evolution and changed over time is also taken into accout, they are compared with normal usage of preqin period and other period. Thus, synchrony and diachrony, static stste and dynamic stste are organically integrated together, so much so that Chuang Tzu, formerly in plane forms, now gains a tendency toward stereoscoy. In conclusion, the thesis combines microcosmic analysis and macro- scopical exploration closely, unveils some basic characteristics of preqin Chinese by studying adverbs of Chuang Tzu, checks up the bypast study means achievement of adverbs of Chuang Tzu, and expatiates my opinions in some aspects.
