Teaching College English in big classes is the main format of foreign language teaching commonly adopted in colleges and universities in our country at present. To discuss the problems arisen in this format and elucidate feasible solutions to them will play active roles in improving English teaching in colleges and universities and deepening the reformation of high education so as to cultivate more high qualified talents.The format of teaching college English in big classes has a long history in our country, and the problems of it have been existing for years up to now. In the past college English teaching kept focusing on the linguistic knowledge centered mode, and the method of teaching was accordingly the spoon-feeding. The mode and the method were affected little by the size of classes, so the hidden problems in teaching failed to catch enough attention. With the enrolment expansion in colleges and universities in recent years, classes of English teaching become bigger and bigger. Meanwhile, the quality system education is carried on more and more widely, and the goal of college English teaching is transforming from imparting linguistic knowledge to cultivating students' communicative competence. The problems are becoming more clearly and doing great harm to the quality of college English teaching. Therefore, how to solve them in order to perfect the format works as the decisive factor to improve the quality of college English teaching. On the basis of the results of the theories and practice of college English teaching in big classes by the experts at home and abroad, this thesis manages to make a further induction and analysis of the problems in college English teaching in big classes, and works out some solutions and countermeasures to them. It finally puts forward three problems that need further discussion and study.The thesis consists four parts:In the first part, the thesis briefly recalls the history of class teaching system, and renews the concept of college English teaching in big classes on the basis of different notions of teaching in big classes by the experts at home and abroad. Then it probes in the reasons why college English teaching in big classes is widely adopted in our country.In the second part, the thesis analyses the situation of the college English teaching in big classes, and points out the nine problems that concern with teaching subjects, teaching environment, teaching mode and feedback: The quantity of teachers is insufficient and the quality in available needs to be improved. Teaching can not be carried out according to the standard requirements because of the weak bases and various levels of students. The way in which seats are arranged in classrooms is not suitable for performing teaching activities.The means of teaching is monotonous because of the lack of language teaching instruments and the low rate of making use of the available. It is difficult to organize the teaching activities because of the large number of students and limited teaching space. The individual communication between teachers and students is so little that teachers can not understand much about aspirations and needs of students. The methods used in teaching are traditional and out of date, and as a result, the teaching tasks can not be well fulfilled. Teaching feedback is not ideal because the papers of students can not be corrected and commented in time. The papers of schooling achievement tests are poorly designed and organized, and the examination-oriented phenomenon dominates the teaching.In the third part, the thesis, on the basis of the teaching practice, puts forward ten countermeasures according to the problems in college English teaching in big classes: Strengthen the teachers' professional training and improve their specialized aptitude. Give full play to the students' initiative of study and cultivate their ability of self-teaching. Form groups reasonably in class and play their roles completely in classroom teaching and management.
