With a feel of lack of adequate discussion about the role of the readership in translation and interpreting in particular, the writer has tried, in the paper, to integrate the role of the TT audience in interpreting, which is done mainly on the basis of her personal experiences. The "German School" of functionalist translation theory, Roger T. Bell's model of translating process, and reception theory also provide a solid theoretical foundation for the exploration of the role of the target-text addressee in translation.The discussion focuses on the process of translating that is divided into three major stages, namely, background preparation, the actual process of translating that is further divided into source text analysis, target-text synthesis, and revision. The role of the TT readers is given an analysis in every stage with illustrative examples.Due to limited original resources on interpretation, in particular the theoretical discussion on the topic, the author's initial plan did not include the interpreting part. It is the consistent encouragement from Professor Chen Gang that prompted the author to try out some of her ideas about interpretation based on insufficient amount of material reading and inadequate interpreting experiences in the current thesis. It is the author'ssincere hope that more insightful analysis will follow after further reading, practicing, and thinking.
